In Loving Memory of Tommy Lewis Edwards, Jr. (February 17, 1991- June 10, 2024)

Columbus, Ohio mourns the loss of a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend, Tommy LewisEdwards Jr., fondly known as “Tom” to many, possessed a radiant spirit. His boundless love touched thelives of all who had the honor of knowing him. Born on a crisp winter day in Columbus, Tommy broughtimmeasurable joy to his family and friends.

Tommy’s formative years at Southeast Christian Academy and Eastmoor Academy were marked by hismagnetic charisma and sharp wit. Tommy's exceptional spelling abilities stood out early on, and he eventually represented his school in the Spelling Bee Championship, receiving honors. His achievements in these competitions were a source of immense pride for his family and a testament to his dedication and focus. Tommy’s classmates fondly remember him as the heart and soul of their school experience, always ready with a smile and a helping hand.

Long before the advent of modern navigation tools like Garmin and Google Maps, little Tommy had an uncanny ability to navigate the city with ease, earning him the affectionate role of "human GPS." His family marveled at his innate sense of direction and his ability to recall intricate details about various locations. This talent, combined with his bright and curious mind, made him a beloved and indispensable guide in his family and  friends.

Tommy's early years were profoundly shaped by his mother, Marlana. Her unwavering dedication to exposing him to a good life and diverse ways of thinking took them on many adventures together. Marlana's commitment to nurturing Tommy's inquisitive mind and compassionate soul was evident in their countless cherished moments. Sundays and Wednesdays were often spent at church, where Tommy found solace and inspiration in the teachings and a particular Bible verse that guided him throughout his life: Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon formed against me shall prosper." These words became a mantra for Tommy, reflecting his resilience and faith.

Their weekends were also filled with excursions to car shows, where he marveled at the craftsmanship that fueled his love for automobiles. Tommy’s enthusiasm extended beyond the world of cars to the Parade of Homes and afternoons at the golf range, where Marlana taught the value of patience. One of the most memorable experiences was Tommy's first airplane ride with Marlana, a journey that opened his eyes to the endless possibilities that lay beyond the horizon. This experience, like so many others orchestrated by his mother, was intended to broaden his perspectives and instill in him a love for adventure and learning. Her unwavering love and support shaped him into a man of empathy, always eager to uplift and help those around him.

Tommy shared an unbreakable bond with his father, Tommy Sr., embarking on countless escapades that forged enduring memories. One of the most memorable highlights of Tommy’s childhood was their trip to Disney World. This magical journey was more than just a vacation; it was a testament to his father’s desire to see the world through Tommy’s eyes and to share in the wonder and excitement that such an experience could bring. At Disney World, Tommy's imagination was ignited by the fantastical worlds and characters that came to life before him. His father watched with pride and joy as Tommy's eyes sparkled with wonder and his laughter echoed through the happiest place on earth. This trip was a cornerstone of their shared memories, a vivid reminder of his father's love and dedication to every moment spent with his son.

Theirs was a relationship rooted in unconditional love, a testament to the enduring power of familial bonds. His father’s devotion was evident in every smile shared and every dream nurtured, instilling in Tommy a deep sense of compassion for life.

At a young age, Tommy displayed a natural talent for cooking, which was inspired by his father. He spent countless hours in the kitchen with his father and Grandma Betty. Tommy experimented with new recipes or showcased his culinary skills at family gatherings. Whether he prepared lamb chops, Mac & Cheese, or Lobster pasta, Tommy's passion for food brought joy and comfort to all who dined with him. As the years progressed, Tommy developed a taste for fine dining. He regularly could be found with his peers at upscale restaurants in Columbus. Ocean Club and Ruth Chris were two of his favorites.

If Tommy called you “friend”, you were family. Tommy's commitment to his friends was unparalleled. He was always there to lend a listening ear, offer words of encouragement, give driver’s lessons, or share a thousand jokes and ten thousand laughs during both the highs and lows of life. His infectious humor and quick wit were legendary among his friends, who have countless stories of Tommy's sing-alongs, impromptu dance parties, antics, and pranks that never failed to bring smiles to their faces.

Though Tommy's time with us was tragically cut short, his warm spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His kindness, generosity, and zest for life serve as a reminder to “love hard”. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "It's not the length of life, but the depth of life." Tommy Edwards lived a life of extraordinary depth, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lasting friendships that will continue to uplift and inspire us.

Rest in peace, dear Tommy. Your light may have dimmed, but your spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who loved you.

Tommy is preceded in death by paternal grandmother Betty Edwards and maternal grandfather Anthony Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memories, father Tommy L. Edwards, Sr., mother Marlana and stepfather Tony Lowery, stepmother Tamera Cannon; brothers Tylan Edwards, and Antony Lowery, sisters Sheila Evans, Tiara Edwards, and Gabriella Lowery; paternal grandfather Tommy Louis Coleman, maternal grandmother Tena Mason; great-grandmother Eva Welch of Columbus; aunts Kimberly Edwards, Rhonda Foust, Kazi Hurt of Columbus, Martina (Leslie) Johnson of Georgia, uncles Mario Davis, Victor Edwards, and Dwand Montgomery of Columbus; special friends Kiara Mitchell and Mikaelyn Simmons and a host of relatives, and friends. 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:6-7
