Virginia Ann Grant

Virginia Ann Grant, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday October 24th, 2019 after a brief illness, although sometimes in pain she never once complained. Virginia was born on July 24th, 1940, in Booneville, Mississippi to the late Thomas Ed Gorden and Rilla Bell McCoy-Gorden. Her dear aunt Elizabeth Shumpert affectionately known as “Ebby” assisted in raising Virginia after her mother’s passing at the age of 2.

At age 11 she moved to Cleveland, Ohio to live with her father Thomas Gorden and beloved step-mother Leona Gorden. Virginia loved the Lord, accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age, she later joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she served faithfully throughout her youth.

Virginia graduated from Glenville High School in 1958 and from there attended Jane Adams Vocational School. Her servant’s heart compelled her to the medical field due to the fact that she simply wanted to help people.

She was united in Holy matrimony to Nathaniel Grant on October 21st, 1961, to this union two children were born Anthony and Annette.

She served University Hospital in Cleveland Ohio and retired after 43 years as a supervisor of nutrition services assisting patients with dietary changes due to illness and customizing meal plans to help them get well. She excelled in many aspects and was promoted consistently. She was also honored as Staff Member of the Month on numerous occasions. Both her staff and patients spoke highly of her and considered her an asset to her division.

Virginia was a loving and caring wife for 50 years and a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She became like a second mother to all of her children’s friends and grandma to their children. She knew no strangers and impacted everyone she met. Virginia had an infectious smile and spirit and was loved everywhere she went. An avid sports fan, one of her favorite pastimes was watching the Cleveland Cavaliers play basketball, specifically her favorite player Lebron James. She also loved playing Bingo, line dancing, shopping, traveling, and spending time with her family.

She was well known for her cooking and baking abilities, and her pound cakes were a crowd favorite.
She will be missed by all who knew her and the many lives she touched.

Virginia is preceded in death by both of her parents Thomas Ed and Rilla Bell, her beloved step-mother Leona Gorden, her aunt Ebby and Uncle Vance Shumpert, cousins Erron Grant and Jannie Shumpert, and her husband Nathaniel Grant, the love of her life.
