William Marshall Smith

William “Bill” Marshall Smith was born November 27, 1930 in Chillicothe, Ohio and went home to be with the Lord on Friday afternoon, January 1, 2021.

Bill is survived by daughter, Renee (Roderick) Jones; brother, James R. Smith Jr.; sister, Marian Castlin; grandchildren, Rico Paige and Riane Paige; nephews, James R. (Pam) Smith III, Mark (Valerie) Smith, Steven (Teresa) Smith and Dan (Lisa) Holliman; niece, Derre (Tobey) Attia and a host of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by parents, James Robert and Erma D. (Jones) Smith; sister, Erma Jean Smith; sister-in-law Iris Smith and brother-in-law Bill Castlin.

Bill served in, the United States Army and was stationed in Munich, Germany from 1952 to 1954 and was released with an honorable discharge. Bill was a member of the elite Cavalier’s Club in the 1960’s. He was a salesman at General Tire for many years and later started and operated his own successful asphalt and paving business, Avery Asphalt Company until the early 2000’s.

Bill loved to travel in his early years and enjoyed an annual trip to the Mardi Gras. A great negotiator, storyteller and conversationalist who loved his roots in Chillicothe. A self-made craftsman who made everything from jewelry boxes, to gun holsters; and an avid hunter and fisherman who would proudly share his achievements – “three shots; three turkeys.”

Bill was a long-time member of New Salem Baptist Church and attended regularly until he moved into a long-term care facility where he enjoyed bingo, puzzles and socializing with the other residents. He continued serving the Lord by comforting other residents and encouraging them to have a closer relationship with the Lord and participate in monthly communion.

Bill will be greatly missed by family and friends!
